In times of uncertainty people tend to obsess over the short term, but what gets us through difficult times are the people who are able to look beyond the short term and build a bigger future. The economy will boom again... and the stock market will rise through it's previous highs again...

As manager's we have a responsibility to give people hope for the future. Giving them hope for the future gives them power in the present.

We are in the midst of tough times... and I suspect there are tough times ahead... and no one can guarantee you the future. The future belongs to those who add value in the present.

We need to stop sitting around waiting for the economy to turn. There are 300 million people in the United States and I have to believe that if 300 million stepped it up a notch something incredible would happen.

So, let's step it up a notch!

When times are tough it is more important than ever for us to dream... and to encourage others to do the same. When we are surrounded by negativity it is critical that we keep our thoughts, words, and habits positive.

Even during the worst recessions, 20% of businesses and people are thriving while the rest are simply trying to survive. Decide to be part of that 20% in 2009... because they are the ones who breathe new life back into a business, an industry, a culture, an economy, and a country.

Hope is what the people of every age need to go out and build a future bigger than the past. Encourage them to dream and you will give them hope for the future. And when we give people hope for the future we give them power in the present.

Dreams can still come true. Don't forget it.

As the end of the year draws near, it is important that as managers we make time to thank all those that have supported us in our efforts this year. There are almost 7 billion people on the planet, and I suspect 6.9 billion go to bed each night not feeling appreciated. Give them a gift... or a party... but take a few moments to look them in the eye and say, "Thanks for all you do." I don't know anybody who doesn't like to be appreciated.
