In his writings from Walden Pond Henry David Thoreau first used the phrase, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Everyone is familiar with this saying, but it seems very few read beyond this phrase... or read his writings at all. From this phrase Throreau moves in to a discussion surrounding the question: What is necessary? The truth is, very little. When we examine what it is we really need we discover we need very little. If we then turn back to all we have, we discover that we live in the midst of abundance - even during these times of economic trial. This is a time to step back and recognize how little we actually need to thrive and survive, to be happy, and healthy, and holy. And, it is a time to be grateful for all that we have beyond what we actually need.

Everywhere you turn people are dooming and glooming about how tough things are, and yet I still see and hear about a lot of great things happening. I had dinner Thursday night with a guy who just sold a business he had been building with a partner for 7 years... On Saturday at the Living The Dream Event in West Palm Beach, Florida, it was so good to be surrounded by people excited about their dreams and helping others identify and chase dreams... And day after day I get emails from readers who tell me how The Dream Manager has or is changing their life, their marriage, their company, and their team.
I know you have something to celebrate, too. But when did you last celebrate? I must confess, I am horrible at celebrating. I always say that I will, but when all is said and done and something worthy of celebrating has been accomplished... I just move on to the next thing. Drives my team crazy. And so it should. People need celebration - small and large. Teams need celebration. So this week, take some time to celebrate something or someone worth celebrating.

The problem with technology is that it never takes a break - and you need a break, regularly. When was the last time you turned your cell phone or PDA off for a whole day? Or didn't check your email for a whole day? All of the major spiritual traditions promote a day of rest, and for good reason. You need a day of rest. It makes you more effective for the other six days by renewing and refreshing you. This Sunday, turn it all off. It will be good for you, your relationships, and your business.
