Setbacks with Our Dreams

By Matthew Kelly

One of my dreams this year was to bike across Spain this summer with a couple of friends, along the famous Camino, a five-hundred-mile route from the south of France to the west of Spain. I had planned to be there NOW, instead I am at home recovering from an operation.

A month ago I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and last week I had a total Thyroidectomy. I am fine and the operation was very successful, and there will be some follow-up treatment in the months ahead. More than anything, I suspect, these will just be inconvenient to my life and the daily pursuit of my dreams.

We all have setbacks from time to time. Is there a dream in your life or business that has experienced a setback? Today is the day to step toward that dream again.

This time of relaxation and solitude has just confirmed for me even more how important dreams are to our lives and our growth. I have scheduled my biking trip again for next July... some dreams just take a little longer.

Something wonderful is about to happen!

What is The Dream Manager Program?

By Matthew Kelly

The participants at the June 7th event asked dozens of questions, some we were able to answer on the day, and others we were not. Over the next several weeks, I am going to offer more detailed answers to their questions on this blog. How do we apply The Dream Manager concept and principles to our lives, teams, relationships, and companies/organizations was the overall theme of the Q&A sessions. If you have a question that you would like answered, feel free to email me at: mkelly@floydconsulting.com

The Dream Manager Program is a thirty-six module course that my colleagues and I at Floyd Consulting designed to formalize the process described in the book. It is one thing to sit down with your employees and talk to them about their dreams, but if real progress is to be made people need a plan. Most businesses that fail do so because they lack a plan. Most people who fail to accomplish their dreams do so because they lack a plan. It's a little like Napoleon said, "Those who fail to plan can plan to fail."

The Dream Manager Program helps participants to come up with a plan to accomplish their dreams. Each month your Dream Manager will walk you through one of the thirty-six modules. These modules deal with the twelve areas listed on page 124 of the book and are designed to change the way we look at ourselves, our work, our relationships by teaching us to think strategically about our dreams. Between your monthly sessions with your Dream Manager there will be some brief suggested readings and other activities to help you clarify your dreams, and your plan to accomplish them.

I am speaking here of the official Dream Manager Program ,which is owned and licensed by Floyd Consulting. Is the official program really powerful and effective? Yes, absolutely. At the same time, your company may not be willing or able to embark on the formal program at this time. If that is the case, I challenge you... Don't let what you can't do interfere with what you can do. Start circulating copies of The Dream Manager around the office. Have a Dream Session with your team, or a few colleagues over lunch.

We want every company to have a Dream Manager Program(formal or informal). That's why we have made various resources available on this site and at www.floydconsulting.com. For example, you can learn how to facilitate a Dream Session by visiting this link: http://www.floydconsulting.com/Articles-HostASession.asp

The success of your company depends on the people who drive your company. Help them identify and pursue their dreams and you will unleash their passion, energy, enthusiasm, and gratitude. All of this will create a highly engaged team... and that is the ultimate competitive advantage.

Living the Dream

By Matthew Kelly

June 7th marked the first LIVING THE DREAM conference which was attended by individuals and team from more than 65 companies across the US. Some came from Fortune 500 companies and others came from small privately held companies with just two or three employees... and they came to learn how to apply The Dream Manager concept and principles to their lives, their work, and their organizations.

I ended the day with this simple message: Don't let what you can't do interfere with what you can do! You may not be able to formally implement The Dream Manager Program at your company(yet)... but as I said to last Saturdays participants, you can start the conversation. Start talking to the people in your life about their dreams. You will be amazed by the passion, energy, enthusiasm, and vitality that this conversation begins to release in relationships and families, and in teams and companies.

Over the coming weeks I intend to answer many questions that were submitted at The Living the Dream Event that we did not have time to get to in the public forum. Until then... Dream big... and dream often... but don't forget, the big dreams are usually made up of several small dreams!
